THE xianxia romance drama Moonlight Mystique, starring Chinese drama queen Bai Lu and rising star Ao Ruipeng, has quickly climbed to the top spot in 12 regions, including Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the United States, Canada, South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, and Australia.
The series, which premiered January 9, has already surged to No. 2 on iQIYI’s trending charts and has well exceeded a heat index of 9,000.
With intricate emotional storytelling and a gripping plot, Moonlight Mystique takes viewers on a fantastical journey of cultivation, demon-slaying, and love.
Adapted from Xing Ling’s novel, the series follows Bai Lu as Bai Shuo, the daughter of a city lord who embarks on a quest for immortal cultivation to repay a life-saving debt.
Along the way, she crosses paths with Ao Ruipeng’s Fan Yue, a powerful deity of the demon tribe. While testing Bai Shuo, Fan Yue's ancient artifact, the 'Wu Nian Stone', unexpectedly recognizes her as its master and enters her body to protect her.
This transforms their relationship from one of mutual exploitation to a blossoming romance as they join forces to battle demons and monsters.

A Visual Breakthrough for Xianxia Dramas
Departing from the dark and somber tones typical of xianxia dramas, Moonlight Mystique brings a vibrant and visually striking aesthetic to the genre.
iQIYI’s production studio producer and person-in-charge, Quan Haojin, shared that the series intentionally breaks away from traditional styling, opting for high-saturation, dopamine-inducing colors instead of muted tones like black, white, and gray.
The elaborate palaces and bridges replace generic immortal sect settings, creating a feast for the eyes and enhancing the viewing experience.
Action-Packed Plot with Heart Wrenching Moments
From the very beginning, the series captures audiences with its fast-paced narrative, including a Train to Busan-inspired xianxia twist.
Key plot elements like the 'Wu Nian Stone' and the conflict among humans, immortals, and demons take center stage. In one gripping scene, the demon tribe unleashes a deadly poison, turning residents into zombies.
Bai Shuo’s father, bitten while saving others, becomes infected. In a desperate attempt to save him, Bai Shuo stabs her own heart to break through barriers and uses her blood to nourish a rare herb for an antidote.
Though her father recovers, he ultimately sacrifices himself to restore peace, inspiring Bai Shuo to grow stronger and seek revenge.

Bai Lu and Ao Ruipeng’s characters weave a bittersweet love story that blends romance with heartbreak. In a playful behind-the-scenes moment, the two actors reenacted a finger 'peck' scene.
What began as a soft and subtle gesture took a hilarious turn when Ao Ruipeng unexpectedly pecked Bai Lu’s finger repeatedly, leaving her laughing and exclaiming, “Not so intense! Don’t scare people!”
Ao Ruipeng doubled down, joking, “This is how my character should kiss!” Fans were delighted by their lighthearted banter.
Bai Lu, celebrated for her roles in Story of Kunning Palace, Only for Love, and Till the End of the Moon, is known as the 'Universal CP Queen' for her undeniable chemistry with male leads.
She humbly remarked, “I was so nervous, but it shows we both got into character, which is why everyone feels we’re a good match. Working with Ruipeng has been great.”
Ao Ruipeng, in stark contrast to his cold and domineering character, is a mischievous and energetic presence on set. Known as the 'walking source of joy,' he keeps spirits high with his playful antics and funny short clips.
Bai Lu shared her admiration for his ability to stay upbeat, admitting she frequently watches his comedic videos.
