TAN SRI RAZMAN SINGS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR PALU, SULAWESI’S EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI VICTIMS

JEFFREY Cheah Foundation Trustee and Sunway Group Executive Deputy Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Razman M. Hashim, last evening, sang together with The Big Jazz Band of Lewis Pragasam and Professor Don Bowyer as well as The Seasons 4 for a charity benefit in aid of MERCY Malaysia’s mission to Palu, Sulawesi.

The spectacular performance enthralled some 400 guests who attended the benefit event held at Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa, raising RM 200,000 for the victims of a major earthquake and tsunami which hit Sulawesi.

Concert pass sales raised RM100,000 and another RM100,000 was matched by Sunway Group as part of its social responsibility initiatives. Sunway Hotels and Resorts had sponsored the venue and refreshments for the guests so that all proceeds can be channeled to MERCY Malaysia.

Royal guests in attendance includes Deputy Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, His Majesty Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah AlMaghfur-lah and Her Royal Highness Raja Permaisuri Perak Darul Ridzuan Tuanku Zara Salim, as well as His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj, Sultan of Selangor and Her Royal Highness Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin.

His Majesty Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah is the Royal Patron for MERCY Malaysia while His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah is the Royal Patron for the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.

Other guests in attendance includes Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO; ambassador of Japan HE Makio Miyagawa and Republic of Singapore High Commissioner, HE Vanu Gopala Menon; Datuk Sri Akbar Khan and Datin Sri Dayang Camelia Khan.

Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, AO said,

“While Jeffrey Cheah Foundation’s core focus is on education, we also want to help those who are affected by natural disasters. We hope that our involvement and financial aid will be able to an extent, support those affected. I would also like to thank Tan Sri Razman for volunteering his time for this cause.”

Earlier in October, the natural disaster had claimed, in its wake, thousands of lives. Over 200,000 were displaced from their homes as a result of the disasters.

Currently, MERCY Malaysia is providing medical relief, sustainable health related development and risk reduction activities for the communities affected by the disaster through the Palu Sulawesi Fund.

MERCY Malaysia Executive Director, Ir. Amran Mahzan, thanked the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Tan Sri Razman and the guests who had contributed generously to the Fund.

“The generosity of Malaysians today will be a much needed shining beacon of hope in one of the darkest times for the people of Sulawesi. We thank each and every Malaysian, the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and extend our heartfelt gratitude to Tan Sri Razman Hashim for this wholehearted act of humanity,” he said.

Music For the Soul

A successful jazz singer in his own right, Tan Sri Razman started performing in public since a decade ago. He has also taken part in several charity concerts as well as performing alongside the Selangor Philharmonic Orchestra.

Performing for the first time in Jeffrey Cheah Foundation’s concert, he sang 10 songs including Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me To The Moon, I’ve Got You Under My Skin and Autumn Leaves.

His dulcet tones were perfectly accompanied by The Big Jazz Band of Lewis Pragasam and Professor Don Bowyer. Consisting of two talented Malaysians and two Americans, the quartet has famed jazz drummer and Asiabeat founder Lewis Pragasam as its drummer; Sunway University’s Dean of School of Arts and Professor Don Bowyer as its trombonist and composer; Sunway University’s Associate Professor, Dr George Hass as its guitarist; National Symphony Orchestra’s Marina Zaini as its bassist. Collectively the musicians have played in more than 50 countries around the world.

The entertainingly jovial The Seasons 4 made a special appearance at the benefit. The audience were presented with a delightful mix of classic jazz favourites performed by Rahim Ismail and accompanied by quartet members, Hussain Shaari, Syed Elias Alhabshi and Ezani Abu Bakar.
